The bicycle seems like the ideal vehicle for transportation over short distances. Most people commute less than 10 miles each way to work. Plus, a lot of weekend errands are just driving around from one parking lot to another. The bicycle seems like the solution to a lot of problems- global warming, high gas prices and fat, out of shape people.

Give me some training ideas for a long distance biking trip I want to make?

I am planning on doing a bicycle trip from Baltimore, Maryland to The outer banks in North Carolina. I have already mapped out the roads to take there but I need to get in better shape. I need ideas on how to make my self ready to ride 100 miles a day. Also I need ideas on what type of touring bike I should get because the one I have now isn’t that reliable for the ride I want to make.
